What is the Junior High Project?

The Junior High Project (JHP) is a substance abuse prevention program that trains middle school students to be leaders in their schools and communities. JHP consists of three essential steps.

PHASE 1 is the residential training weekend during which participants are taught by professionals, trained adults and peer staff members about an array of topics ranging from prevention education to stress management.
PHASE 2 consists of three follow-up sessions which will take place after the residential weekend. The follow-up meetings include workshops and small group time to provide opportunities to increase and reinforce information, skills and self-concept development.
PHASE 3 involves the participants returning to their schools and working with the school advisor and leadership group to plan and implement substance abuse prevention activities in their schools and communities.

JHP 2002-2003

Weekend #1:    November 15-17, 2002          Jeffersonville, VT

Weekend #2:    January 10-12, 2003              Pittsford, VT

What can JHP do for my school?

  • Provide opportunities for students to take on leadership roles.
  • Develop effective teams of students and adults.
  • Raise school and community awareness about substance abuse.
  • Establish a critical mass of youth who choose not to use.
  • Promote prevention activities and substance-free events.

What can JHP do for its participants?

  • Help gain a stronger sense of self from being part of a supportive community.
  • Enhance ability to create and implement projects that can improve their everyday environment.
  • Strengthen knowledge about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, as well as life skills and leadership skills. This knowledge will hopefully reduce their chances of involvement in substance abuse.
  • Provide opportunities to connect and interact with students from other schools and create meaningful friendships that will span the distance between schools.
